Country clubs are private clubs that may or may not have closed or limited membership. Most country clubs offer recreational sports such as, golf, tennis, swimming, and polo. They also usually have a restaurant and or a bar. Country clubs can be very exclusive when it comes to membership especially in larger cities. Usually in larger cities fees are higher and competition for a limited amount of memberships is higher. Along with fees there are some requirements that come along with gaining membership. Membership may be limited to the people who reside in a particular community. Over the years a lot of country clubs have refused to admit minority racial groups such as African Americans, Asian Americans, and Hispanic Americans. In some cases people of Jewish and catholic faith have been turned away as well. Lastly some country clubs do not allow women to join at all. In some cases, lawsuits have forced clubs to drop discriminatory policies. Some of the most famous country clubs such as The Augusta National Golf Club, where the Masters Tournament is held, is one of the clubs that does not allow women to join. In September 2008 Katon Dawson left Forest Lake Club after a twelve year membership because it still has a whites-only restriction. That is a little shocking that even in the year 2008, as it indicates; there are still restrictions on race in certain places.
Country clubs that discriminate against race, women, and or religion are racist, sexist and define bigotry at its best. In today’s society there is no room for such practices because we have supposedly gotten past the times when these practices were allowed and we have even passed laws restricting such practices. We as a society have gotten past the days where those social groups have been marginalized for being “different” and country clubs are no exception to the rule. Any country club that still discriminates against minority social groups should be eradicated. The mere fact that some country clubs still practice discrimination goes to show that racism, sexism, and bigotry are all alive and kicking.
