Recently, a commissioner of a basketball league, Don “Moose” Lewis, has announced the start of a new basketball league that will only involve white players. He has made it clear that nobody of color would be allowed to try out or join the league. He claims that this is because he doesn’t want to play “street-ball” instead, he wants to represent fundamental basketball which he says is played only by people who were born of Caucasian parents in the United States. I think this is purely racist. I don’t see how someone could just exclude a race from a sport that people of any color could be good at. Sports are something that is fairly distributed among ethnicities. People of all color can excel in any sport simply based on individual skill. This is how everything should be looked at but this is simply not the case. I think it is sad that this commissioner is using his power to segregate people according to race. This is the type of behavior we see in many different forms in our country whether it be in movies, television, magazines or on the internet. I wonder if this commissioner is using his power and creating this league simply to become famous and well known or if he truly thinks that this should be a valid league. I wonder if situations like this will cause African American celebrities and athletes to “challenge” instead of sticking to “comfort” like the issues that are discussed in the Cashmore reading. I think that this should be an issue that people of all color discuss and do not stand for. I hope people stand up and this basketball commissioner is punished for his racial comments and his attempt to even create this racist basketball league. This commissioner should not be allowed to continue with this league. Is this a racial issue that we should all fix or does allowing him to continue with this league give him the rights he deserves?
