Actresses Trying to Sing

I recently stumbled across the phrase Hayden Panettiere Video on a gossip website. When I first caught a glimpse of this title, I assumed she had finally leaked a nude video of herself along with a multitude of other Holywood starlets. Unfortunately it was worse.

Hayden Panettiere is attempting to add singer to her long and until now not completely disgraceful resume. Sure, since playing the kick ass little girl in Remember the Titans her career has taken a decisive turn towards cheerleaders roles. But the way to shake things up is certainly not to relinquish what little dignity you have left.

Hayden is not the first and far from the best of actresses attempting to turn into a singer. A most recent and successful attempt comes from Gossip Girls’ Leighton Meester, who has collaborated with legitimate musical acts such as Cobra Starship and Robin Thicke. She also had already dabbled in the musical arts when she got her start pre-Gossip Girl on HBO’s Entourage playing a young pop star.

So it seems that everyone is trying it, following behind marginal pop-star/actresses such as Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff. Scarlett Johansson, a much more seasoned actress than either Hayden or Leighton, also decided that she wanted to achieve a music career. In 2007 she released an album covering Tom Wait’s songs, and in recent months she released a duet album with friend, Pete Yorn. Although none of her music has become particularly popular, it hasn’t been completely tragic either.

Miley Cyrus manages to juggle both careers through the coaching of Disney Execs. Her acting is popular with tween girls and her singing is decent enough to land fans of all ages. Her ability to manage both lies in her equal talent for both careers. She also started both careers at a young age and within the same outlet.

Hayden is the most recent in a long line of these attempts. My question remains: Why do these actresses feel the need to prove their singing abilities as well? And why is nobody telling them to stop?
