YouTube Working to Bring Major Studios to its Movie Rental Service

The Google-owned video sharing site is once again talking to the major movie studios about offering up their content for rental, following reports last Fall that deals were in the works with Lionsgate, Sony, and Warner Brothers — deals that still haven’t officially materialized. It appears that YouTube’s ambitions for getting in on the online movie rental game extend far beyond the the independent films they made available earlier this week.

Amazon's Video on Demand player is one of the most popular rental service and would be the site for purchasing movies and TV if it was playable on the iPhone/iTunes/iPod. YouTube would have a lot of work to do to become a player in this field. However by being a massive company, Google, they are ambitious and sure know how to stay ahead of the game. More and more people are shifting their channel of information gathering from television to the computer screen. Many aren’t even bothered to own a TV or cable service because everything is now available on the web. Youtube has also overcame the quality issue by offering HQ for many of its videos. Increasing number of cell phone online data usage also gives YouTube to opportunity to cooperate with those major carriers. For example, users would love it if they are able to rent and then instantly view full-length movies or TV shows on their phones.
