Perez Hilton

Every time you surf the internet today there is another blogger giving their opinion on something. Some focus on politics, others world news, while others talk about pop culture, especially focusing on celebrities. Probably the most famous celebrity/pop culture blogger is known as Perez Hilton. Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, took his name from none other than the infamous Paris Hilton. Perez draws millions of views on a daily basis making his blog one of the most popular on the internet.

Perez Hilton gained popularity from his cutthroat journalism and his no holds bar style of blogging. He tells it like it is whether anyone likes it or not and he’s definitely not afraid to interject his opinion into his articles.

Hilton differs from traditional tabloids in that he has an obvious bias to his stories. Whether or not tabloids are biased is debatable, but they will usually attempt to be unbiased while Perez Hilton uses his blog as an opportunity to share his opinions with his readers.

Nowadays, Hilton has become a celebrity in his own right. His infamous reputation has been known to make and break careers. If he likes you, you will probably do well and get some good, free publicity. Lady Gaga is a great example of an artist Hilton promoted from day one who is now a huge megastar recording artist. On the other hand, if he dislikes you, it could definitely hurt your career.

Perez Hilton’s popularity can most likely be attributed to the fact that people are fascinated with the lives of celebrities. Everyone loves a good, old-fashioned scandal. The question is: why do we care? Freccero explains that we are most influenced by those who are in power. In our culture, we often interpret those in power to be celebrities. We are intrigued by these people because of their visibility in our society and we relate to them in one way or another.
