The Williams Sisters

Tennis is a very international sport, with many players from Eastern Europe, Russia and South America, Australia and of course the United States.

In the history of the United States the sport of tennis was considered usually to be a white sport. However if you look at the rankings today you will see that that is not longer that case.

Venus and Serena William have taken over the sport. And they are not just any tennis players, they are the best. Consistently ranked at the top they are rarely beaten in major tournaments except occasionally by each other and together in doubles they are practically unbeatable. Serena Williams has been holding on to the ranking of number one in the world for awhile now. Venus once higher, is not far behind at number six. There is no other current American female player that comes close to that.

In Gray’s book he discussed ideas about race and representation. Venus and Serena Williams are strong black female women and represent themselves and their culture not only in tennis but in society. They are exactly the positive, visible representation answer.

In fact the women go beyond tennis. The girls also do their own fashion which they both wear and design. They do advertisements and endorsements and are overall successful hard working women. And they have taken on a majority role in a sport where they were once considered minorities and perhaps still are. However one would never know watching them play and seeing their popularity, that it was any ever different. Venus and Serena are all over the women’s circuit makes a name for themselves and representing their race.

The Australian Open is currently going on and both women are doing extremely well. Personally I am a big fan and hope to see them stay on top. With their powerful serves and quick and powerful presence they are certainly made visible and entertaining to watch.
