Tila Tequila: Activist?

Tila Tequila is a personality who became popular from her MySpace page. She is a singer, model, and television personality. She was initially a model for Playboy and worked on building her career from there. In 2007 she began filming a reality television show for VH1. It was a dating show just like most other dating shows. However, her show had a twist to it. She was not a single girl looking for Mr. Right. Instead, she took on the personality of a confused bisexual woman. She had both men and women vying for her attention and love. Those vying for her love, however, did not know of her bisexuality. This was the big twist. This show truly took the reality dating show to the next level (downward, if you ask me).
For entertainment value, this show was great. However, when you look deeper at the meaning behind the show it becomes a little disturbing. At first is just seems like a ploy to encourage young men to watch the show in the hopes of seeing two women make out. Or perhaps it is a ploy to outrage religious groups and get ratings from all of the attention. She seemed to be a true martyr for the LGBT community, but I would argue that she is nothing close. Instead, I believe that she has trivialized the struggle that bisexual and gay young adults deal with.
Tila Tequila sort of puts her sexuality out there in order to profit and excite young boys on her reality show “A Shot of Love”. The show makes the situation of being a bisexual young adult in America seem ideal. She has sixteen men and lesbian women throwing themselves at her. They sleep in a huge bed together. She is having the time of her life. However, they do not go into detail about the internal struggle young LGBT adults deal with. She does not discuss the internal struggle she may have had while figuring out her sexual identity. Instead, it was all fun and games for her to have all of these sexual relationships with both men and women without any true afterthought.
It is perfectly alright for us as viewers to sit and enjoy this show. However, we have a responsibility to think beyond what they are showing us. We need to be aware of the real struggle that LGBT people experience and how there have been people who have lost their loves because of their sexual identity. “A Shot of Love” does not touch on this at all. Therefore, it is our responsibility to do so.
