Production - you like something, you are going to see it for a long time

Vampires are everywhere, seriously. Currently, you cannot live a day without encountering some vampire experience. Whether it’s a commercial for the CW’s Vampire Diaries or a billboard of Robert Pattinson, vampires are taking over the media. The mass production of vampires has proved how much influence the general public has on what is being produced. The over production of vampire materials proves Stuart Hall’s theory of a cultural circuit.

Stephanie Meyer created a four book series and debuted her first book, Twilight, in 2005. Since the release of her fourth book, Breaking Dawn, in 2008, she has managed to break records and create a frenzy for vampire fans everywhere. Noticing how popular the book series had become, Summit Entertainment bought the rights to create a four movie series on Stephanie Meyer’s novels. The first movie was an instant success and has grossed $384,997,808.

Producers saw the success of the Twilight Saga and started created their own vampire stories. True Blood, a romantic action series on HBO aired in September of 2008. In 2009, the novel series, The Vampire Diaries, was released and was soon followed up by a television series produced by the CW. There has become a never-ending list of new vampire television shows, movies, and books.

True Blood (c) HBO here is so much vampire media because the producers are noticing what consumers like and what is going to make them a substantial amount of money. As long as vampires are seen as a profitable item, they are going to continue to be portrayed. Hence the mass production of vampire media. But when is enough, enough? I used to love Twilight. I have read every single book and own the first movie. I was looking forward to viewing the second movie until I was surrounded by mass vampire culture; it turned me off. I decided not to waste my time or money on watching another vampire film. I believe that there is a certain limit when producing a certain genre and for vampires, that limit has been exceeded.
