Lack of Censorship on TV

Growing up, I was heavily censored when it came to the media. I was not allowed to watch Nickelodeon because Rugrats used the word “poopy” and Are You Afraid of the Dark told scary stories. Nevermind MTV even being a channel in my house, it was blocked since we had cable. Needless to say, the first curse word I used was “Shut Up” and I was in the fifth grade. Even though my parents put such harsh restrictions on my brother and I pertaining to the media, I believe that the media then was still heavily censored. When did you ever hear “shit” or “damn” on a television series?

Now, everyday children are exposed to such explicit material online, in the movies, on television etc. The internet is said to be a haven for anyone. It is a place to say and do whatever you want, but should that be the case for children? It takes one click to allow anyone to access pornographic materials. Anyone can read a blog that is inappropriate. I am disturbed by what is put online. On my last computer I had googled something for a project that I was doing and a naked picture of a girl popped up. I was harmlessly googling research for a project and naked girls are surfacing? What if that was my ten-year-old brother googling? How should that be legal?

Censorship.png Standards are slipping quite quickly and it is almost impossible for television shows to air without a curse in the script. The other day I was watching the season finale of The Jersey Shore with my mother and I was embarrassed to watch the show with her because the f-word was being used in every sentence. Even though it is bleeped out you can still understand what they are saying. Television has become so lenient with what they are allowing to air on their stations and they are doing it because of the consumer. If the consumer would take the initiative to block television shows that are explicit and not give them a high viewer rating, then the media would be censored a little more. But for now the public is enjoying the trash that is on tv.
