City Life and Culture

New York City- the city that never sleeps. The city where you can make it big, or really lose it all. With a population of over 8 million people, I’d say it’s quite diverse to say the least. These 8 million people make up the cities culture, each contributing in their own ways. From the cuisine to the fashion, New York City is very unique and everyone brings something to the table. In fact, a lot of our popular culture is born in New York City due to it being the home of many designers and production companies. Take a drive through Manhattan and you’ll see everything and anything that’s popular in the moment. Times Square especially, it hosts huge and elaborate advertisements that millions of people see every day. Just think of how expensive it is to advertise there, but its worth it apparently because its not out of the ordinary to see the same company on the billboards month after month, only changing the ad with the season.

The diversity of the City helps one to understand how popular culture was formed even a century ago. With the emergence of industry and westward expansion, cities began popping up all over the United States. Immigration was also a factor. Immigrants were able to find work due to all the city had to offer in industry. New York City was especially full of immigrants being that many settled their after coming to Ellis Island. Whether they stay or left to go somewhere else, a little bit of culture gets left behind. So next time you visit the City, take the time to immerse yourself in the culture, you’ll notice a lot of interesting things! The formation of cities meant a lot for the cultural front and it contributes to all things popular in the modern world.
