Facebook and your online identity

Facebook is the most prominent social networking site to date of the internet era. Facebook is a social networking site that allows you to connect with people all over the world and share information, photos, and many other things. Facebook currently has over 350 million active users. These members include everyone from politicians, athletes, entertainers, to even in some cases grandparents!
One of the most discussed topics on Facebook is photos. Facebook allows you to upload almost any photo you want to and it has a system where you can “tag” users or friends in photos. In some cases the photos in which you are tagged can be quite compromising and in other cases they may give off an image to the world that you don’t necessarily possess. This topic brings up the question, what do your facebook photos say about you? Also, what kind of identity is seen through the photos and albums in which you are tagged? We’ve learned through Bell that while on the internet and social networking sites in particular you construct your own identity. Your facebook photos are a big part of that identity that you construct and they say a lot about your personality and even some of your friends if they are tagged. Nowadays jobs are starting to figure this out as well and they often times check people’s facebook and photos. According to a March survey by Ponemon Institute, 35 percent of job companies use Google to do background checks on job candidates, and 23 percent look people up on social networking sites. Almost one-third of these candidates are not hired. Sites like facebook have helped eliminate the anonymity of the internet. So people who use these sites have to be careful of what they are tagged in and what they are caught on camera doing. People should also watch their language and overall behavior on such sites. Slowly but surely your online identity is affecting your everyday identity and everyone on a social networking site should be careful of the image they display.
