You may or may not have caught “The League” in the month or so it was airing on FX. The show just ran its first six episode mini series and is expected to return in the future. For those who have not had seen the show, its centered around the concept of fantasy football- and the coming of age for the main characters- tying in friendship, parenting and marriage in between. It’s basically about a group of guys and their wives who have developed some good-natured competition between one another in the world of fantasy football. They get pretty tricky and manipulative, forever longing for the one up on their friends whether it is doing each other favors in turn for a good draft pick, or publicly embarrassing each other for the hell of it. This show makes it so obvious to see how caught up people get in the world of fantasy. Also how it cuts in to relationships with other people.
Another fantasy obsession in our culture is that found in cyberspace, in other words avatars. Living vicariously through a computer animated character. The concept can be seen in James Cameron’s movie, Avatar which was a box office blowout and is still going strong. Does the desire to submit to fantasy worlds fill a void in our lives? In the long run, couldn’t living in fantasy wear down on a person? I’d argue yes, that over time these fantasy games will make a person forget the importance of reality. We can’t live in fantasy forever. These fantasy worlds have been brought to us by ever-changing technology, who knows what will come up next.
