Snookin for Love...really?

Over the past few years, reality television, specifically VH1, has taken a liking to shows where a celebrity of some sort is “searching for love”. On these shows, there is the celebrity, and then they bring in however many people who would kill to just spend five minutes with the celebrity. Some celebrities who have put themselves into this interesting sort of situation are Flavor Flav, Bret Michaels, Tila Tequila, and New York, who was actually on Flavor Flav’s show.

Ellis Cashmore provides a discussion about celebrity scandals and how that can increase the amount of interest in a celebrity. Well with the situation involving New York, she was just another girl on Flavor Flav’s show, “Flavor of Love”. However, she did not get along with almost anybody in the whole entire house and created plenty of enemies including one specific girl, Pumpkin. At the end of the show, Pumpkin spits on New York, thus providing one “scandal” that helps boost New York into the life of the celebrity.

This really brings up the question, do people go onto these celebrity love search shows to actually try and get into a relationship with the celebrity? Or are they looking to become the next celebrity to come out of reality television? I think that it is definitely a mixed crowd when the 20 or so people are selected to partake in this sort of competition. The only thing is, I think that these shows are slightly scripted just because I think the producers of the shows want to keep the competitors who are causing the most fights or drama to stay around on the show to keep the ratings up.

Many people, I am sure, have seen the MTV show “Jersey Shore”. It is not for sure yet, it has only been mentioned, but there is a possibility that there could be a new show that is similar to these other ones. It would be called “Snookin for Love”, starring Snooki from “Jersey Shore”. What an interesting show that would be.
