Jennifer and Gerard...dating or not?

At the recent Golden Globe awards, Jennifer Anniston and Gerard Butler were rumored to be getting pretty close. They posed for pictures together on the red carpet, presented the best screenplay award, and then headed backstage together. The rumors really started to fly when they were both no shows at the afterparty. A few days after the Golden Globes, the couple admitted to doing this on purpose because they anticipated the rumors that would occur. Pretty tricky considering they are currently filming a movie together. I think they did this for a publicity stunt, and it was just innocent fun.

As Ellie Cashmore offers insight about celebrity scandals, “whether the social response is one of condemnation or compassion, repugnance or approval, the subject or subjects typically loom large in the publics imagination.” This relates to Jennifer Anniston and Gerard Butlers actions surrounding the Golden Globes. Who’s to say they aren’t lying about denying a relationship, but what does it matter because they are still getting the publicity.

Ultimately it is culture at large that gives celebrities their power. We pay to see their movies, bump their ratings by tuning into their shows and buy magazines featuring them. It’s up to the celebrities to dictate how they want to use that power because once they’ve got the attention of the public eye, there is no turning back. I think the way celebrities manipulate media coverage is something they have advantage over. So my message to celebrities would be to use it to their advantage!
