Are high cast movies making a comeback in television series, or will "Spartacus, Blood and Sand" a new television series premiering tonight (January 22, 2010) be another family drama like the O.C. just in Spartan armor and gladiator sandals? From the early to mid-00s high cast historical flicks hit the box office in a big way. Movies like Troy, 300, and Kingdom of Heaven featured thousands and thousands of cast members in order to dramatize historical and fictional wars. With the downfall of the economy, even Hollywood had to make budget cuts and no longer make high cast movies like this, because it cost too much for scenery and cost too much to employ all the extra actors. Now, the historical film genre is making a comeback with the television series, Spartacus. But will this new series live up to the amazing part fact part fictional historical films made in the past decade, or will Spartacus fall short and be just another TV drama with out-of-date clothing? Reviews for Spartacus: Blood and Sand have said that this series is sure to be completely different than anything on television right now. It steers clear away from the regularity of family drama, crime drama and reality tv. Spartacus is said to please those who loved the high cast war films from recent years because it features violence, war and age-old politics without a whole bunch of family values and relationship dramas. It will be interesting to see how the general public takes to this new series and it will be interesting to see if Spartacus is really all its cracked up to be. It would be a shame for this television series to fall to the wayside because it features the same old drama that modern television series have.
