Heidi Montag is a reality television “celebrity” on the MTV show The Hills. She is thin, blonde, and attractive to a lot of people. A couple of years ago I guess she thought I was necessary to get a breast augmentation. Ok, that seems to be in the water in los Angeles, as many females especially in the entertainment industry have boob jobs. However recently she has just undergone 10 plastic surgery procedures in one day, including reconstructing her face and nose, as well as another breast augmentation.
This has come as a shock to many people because there was nothing really wrong with her. She was seen in most cases as an average pretty girl. Actually I did get a chance to see her in person last summer, and she was even more attractive in person. However, she still underwent an enormous amount of procedures to “fix” herself, and strive to become her ideal. OK, I guess I can respect someone’s choice, if they feel they need to change themselves in order to be happy.
Here is a clip of her talking about her surgery… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMF2vWqOL1o
But here is my question. Is this going to cause a chain reaction? Are more girls going to seek surgery to overcome their body image problems because of Heidi? In the article “Framing Celebrity” by Sean Redmond he that celebrities are mere ‘idols of consumption’ and the “fuel a general desire among people.” Heidi Montag, even though it is drastic no has given fuel to plastic surgery, and given fuel to changing your natural born image entirely. I her story now is viewed as negative, but in a year or so, I think people will gradually start to like the way she looks, and I think more people are going to undergo major reconstruction because of her “success” story, which can merely be all the attention she has gotten thus far.
