The globalization of music through techno

Ever since the creation of Napster and various file-sharing technologies, I’d be lying to say that music has not taken on a transformation of its own. Through file sharing, people are able to connect to a peer to peer network and exchange files with anyone world wide. You may be familiar with Mojo, especially sitting on campus and being able to make use of fellow students files available on the campus network. I think the ability made possible through technological advancements has led to the creation of a growing trend in music- techno. Techno offers different beats and sounds from various DJ’s all over the world but the really unique aspect of techno is the way the DJ’s use each others mixes and add their own flare. You could probably agree that most every hit song is followed by a remix a few weeks later that usually becomes more popular than the original song itself. It’s the ability to either share or in some cases steal, that has led to the techno generation of music.

Lawerence Grossberg puts it like this “for both economic and technological reasons, the world is becoming a smaller place, to put it simply, nations and individuals worldwide are more closely connected by communications then they ever have before.” Not only can the DJ’s reap the benefits of compiling music easily, but they can also get their songs out to millions of people with the click of a button. With people being able to tune in and automatically download weekly podcasts from their favorite DJ’s, the industry is becoming such an easy way to make money. If its this easy now, how do you think things will change in the future? I can only see progression. File sharing was attempted to be shut out and stopped with initial the removal of Napster, but peer to peer networks can now be purchased so it’s technically become a legal business. Where will the file sharing community go from here?
