Some of you might of heard of this- as well as some of you may even have joined the group! If you are in the group, you would have receieved a message reading "To get Pauly D to Turle, there must be a high turnout on Monday, March 8, when The Situation comes. If there is, then there is a good chance Pauly D will come in May." Having almost 2,000 members, this group has become popular throughout UMD students and various Patrons in the College Park area.
When I first saw this group on Facebook, I thought it was just a joke amongst friends starting merely because someone would find it entertaining. The group shot off, and now more than likely two cast members of MTV's Jersey Shore are coming to College Park because of a group on Facebook. I find this amazing, to think that some random "nobody's" so to speak that made it on a show on MTV now are looked at as celebrities in our culture. Jersey Shore, if some of you have not gotten a chance to see an episode, is far from a homey show the whole family can watch. Seen as a much more provocative Real World (if you can even imagine that) Jersey Shore let viewers see the various ways of the "guidos" and "guidets." Drinking, Fighting, Cursing, and hooking up with different people everynight are just a few events viewers got to see when they tuned in to the show.

Along with many of the new reality shows on television, Jersey Shore's cast is no different. As Gamson discussed in his article, Jersey Shore cast members have become famous through the scenerio of fame as manufactured. These random cast members who were mostly picked to be on the show for the main aspect of the fact that they will be the most entertaining, and attract more viewers. None of these cast members necessarily became popular or famous because of a certain talent they have, but became famous because of how they styled their hair, wild dances moves as the "fist pump," and funny accents of their region. Like many shows today, we see reality stars getting their big break in celebrity status through these shows. As compared to Pauly D, he know is seemingly a DJ and is visiting bars across the country, prospectively including The Thirsty Turtle. So why do we love this reality stars the way we do? I honestly think its because we see them as everyday people, making it big in Hollywood from one show.
When everyday people see cast members of Real World book bigger tv show gigs, as well as continuing to rise in fame because of their first show appearences, they see that as a sort of hope. Everyone wants to be famous for one thing or another; sports, singing, dancing, etc...people just want to be known throghout the nation or even throughout the world. These Jersey Shore cast members show us that anyone who is entertaining enough to get good ratings, can make it big in our society. Popular Culture loves these people, and though they might not be compared to Brad Pitt, they still are a good story. It is us everyday people that help Pauly D and The Situation become celebrities. We found them entertaining, and to say that either of them came to one of our popular bars would make us feel like we enjoyed some of the fame as well.
