Heidi Montag: Gone Too Far?

Recently Heidi Montag has been in the news for having had ten plastic surgeries done in one day. She was under the knife for ten hours straight. She reportedly had Botox, liposuction, and fat injections into different parts of her body. She spent around $30,000 to have all of these procedures and yet she claims she is not done yet. She has DDD breasts from her first breast surgery and she claims that she wants to enlarge them again to have an H cup. She even goes on to say that she nearly died following this ten hour surgery. Why, then, would she still be in favor of having more surgeries in the future?
The first thing that came to my mind when I asked myself this question was self-identity as discussed on Bell’s article. Although Heidi is not building an online self-identity like on facebook, it seems as though she is trying to build her own self-identity through surgery. Just as people build a facebook profile online in order to make a certain representation of themselves, Heidi is building an image of herself through surgery. She is creating an image that is built to be specifically as she wants to be seen. Clearly, her choice in the way that she wants to change her image is much more drastic than the way that you or I would change our image. However, I would argue that the intention is really the same. She simply has different resources which she can use to adjust her image.
It is debatable as to whether people will react more positively or more negatively to her new image. Heidi was not always loved by the public. News about her and her husband Spencer was even banned by the E! Entertainment channel. The public was simply tired of hearing about them. Perhaps people will respond more positively to her new image. However, it seems that she was so extreme about her transformation that the public culture will probably be more likely to oppose her new image. I think that it is more likely that the public culture will question why a woman would chose this for herself and they will not be drawn to her new image.
