In this week's issue of People's Magazine there's an entire page dedicated to photos of celebs at the grocery store. There's a photo of Drew Barrymore and Justin Long happily pushing a cart filled with bags through the parking lot. Then there's a whimsical picture of Ashley Tisdale holding onto a grocery cart while her boyfriend, Scott Speer, pushes her along, laughing all the way. And to round out the layout of stars doing mundane things, there's a picture of Keifer Sutherland looking completely bored while waiting to check out his cart full of hot dogs and taco shells. The article has made its point. We are running out of things to talk about. We have gone from their career, family, friends, relationship, marriage, personal style, diet, to their daily grocery shopping. It is pathetic to see what the tabloids have to offer these days. Although popular culture is much more than celebrity gossips, it is inevitable that today we have fallen into the hole of tastelessness. Although actions such as Telethon for Haiti are showing that celebrities are socially responsible, people are much more interested by reading other irrelevant pieces of news about our favorite stars. People are spoiled by those gossips and scandals, positive news can no longer intrigue readers’ interest. The question remains: what is missing in the grocery bag of our culture?
