Dove Evolution

We all know that body image is an issue that many people in the United States deal with daily. However, it has become the normality to see think people portrayed as being the only “beautiful” people. The brand Dove, has taken a stand against this simply stating that what we see on T.V. and in magazines is not realistic. Dove has created several commercials to show that people of average or “normal” size are beautiful too. But is this campaign really to help people feel better about their own self esteem or is Dove actually taking advantage of people’s low self-esteem in order to profit? I would say this is more likely the case. After all, Cullen discusses the fact that T.V. was actually created for the purpose of showing commercials. I personally commend Dove for this. I mean isn’t this the purpose of companies...to make money? Really, the whole reason magazines picture think people in their articles is to sell their product. If people see someone looking the way they want to look, wearing a product they want to wear, subconsciously, they are more likely to buy the product. I think it people generally see what they want to look like in magazines and on T.V. rather than an image of someone who looks like themselves. Dove has taken the opposite side and they are profiting on peoples self-esteem. In their commercials, they try to promote the idea of loving your current body and the way YOU look. Does this really help the self-esteem of our country or is Dove simply trying to make money?
