In our last class we learned about the emergence of commercials. We learned how TV was a money making machine and commercials were the best way to get your product out and into the open world. Well, today with TIVO and DVR we know longer need to sit and patiently watch the commercials waiting for our favorite TV show to reemerge. We can pause, go get a snack or a drink and promptly come back to the couch knowing we will not have to sit through another silly commercial.
However, its advertising agencies responsibility to provide a commercial that can't be fast-forwarded. And over the last two years OREO's commercials have been one that i love to watch. Going to the 'Double Stuff Racing League' and reading about the history of the double stuff racing league has been extremely fascinating. With the emergence of the double stuffed oreo cookie in 1974, to the first double stuffed racing competition in 2008 between the Manning brothers (both Pro NFL quarterbacks) and the Williams sisters (both pro tennis players) popular culture has come to a new level.

Using icons such as the Manning brothers, who can relate to many males and many females as well, and the Williams sisters who relate to female athletes as well as many tennis fans, to Donald Trump himself, the concept of using celebrities in commercials is not new. However, in a context such as this, a race, a competition between twins over the great taste of OREO cookies puts a different spin on things. Making sure you have the proper technique of the twist, lick, and dunk, when watching these 30 second to minute long commercial can get one very active and involved.
Watching these commercials, its amazing how all it takes is one famous person, be it celebrity, athlete, or singer to make a product irresistible. For me growing up it was the Wheaties cereal that did it. Seeing some of my favorite athletes and thinking that they really ate Wheaties for breakfast and thats why they were so good was amazing to me. So every morning for a good number of years I would sit down to breakfast before school with my dad and the two of us would eat our Wheaties together hoping to start a new chapter of our lives. The thought that maybe if i ate enough Wheaties I would go to the WNBA was a huge dream all thanks to Sheryl Swoopes and Lisa Leslie being on the box one time.
These athletes make the OREO cookie that much better.
