The Millionaire Matchmaker is a television series on the Bravo network. It basically follows Patti Stanger’s business of matchmaking in Los Angeles. However, her business is different in that her clients are millionaires. Her club was founded in 2000 and became a television show in 2008. As viewers we watch the entire process of Patti meeting her potential clients. She asks them questions to get a sense of what kind of a person they are and what they may be looking for in a spouse (or if they are even ready to get into a serious relationship). Then, she interviews potential spouses for the millionaire. She looks for certain qualities based upon the qualities she saw in the client initially. She then sets up a mixer for the client and the potential spouses that she thought would be good for the clients. The client chooses a few people that they would be willing go out with and Patti’s job is basically done.
The Millionaire Matchmaker has been very popular. It just began its third season and it opened to its highest ratings yet. Not only has the viewership gone up, but its popularity over the internet has increased dramatically as well. What concerns me about this show is how it is so inherently sexist and how the women are sometimes represented. By this I mean that most of the millionaires are men looking for very attractive (preferably younger) women. The women come to Patti because they are looking to marry a wealthy man. Therefore, it seems as though Patti is setting up the typical older man and “gold digger” couple.
The other thing that I find concerning is during the portion of the show when Patti meets with the women that she may potentially set up with her millionaire client. She initially meets with the women and decides whether they are eligible to meet with the clients based on looks. If they make it through far enough to meet with Patti to talk, Patti will then give them criticism on the way the dress. She will tell them to look more feminine and increase their cleavage. Although I find this show entertaining and Patti does promote older women to some extent, I think that many of the things she says does not promote women.
