Ellen Degeneres, of talk show and Finding Nemo fame, is one of the more hilarious personalities in entertainment. It is her sense of humor and warm personality that has landed her a gig on American Idol and the fourth judge this season and serves as the first step on her new quest…her quest for World Domination. Her 2010 new years resolution was to achieve world domination, or reaching out to the world. She wants people to take a picture with her picture and post it on her website or buy her “car kit”, which is a bumper magnet, a car window flag and an antennae flag. The slogan on the flags and the bumper sticker is “laugh.dance.conquer.” She brings laughter to people everyday, is infamous for her spontaneous dancing, and is spreading the message that she intends to use these to conquor the world. It is her attempt to reach out and see how she affects people’s lives all over the world and she’s doing with a sense of humor.
It is so empowering to see someone like Ellen, who is a pioneer in the LGBT community, show that she wants to bring awareness and acceptance to people all around the world. Gay individuals are not accepted everywhere, and still experience resentment and homophobia frequently. Ellen is using her power as a celebrity to show that people support her and what she represents. In a society that still finds some images of homosexuality offensive, Ellen is portrayed as non-threatening and personable. She is humorously trying to get her message across and is using this resolution as a platform to encourage others to achieve their goals as well. Ellen for world domination!
