I think everyone’s seen a tabloid at least once in their life. Whether they are paid subscribers, or glance at them in line at the super market or doctor’s office waiting room- we’ve all seen one. The purpose of a tabloid is to expose celebrities being themselves. Many times tabloids feature pictures of stars with no makeup, walking their children or dogs in the park, and even mugshots. Ok we get it- celebrities are real people too. “Tabloidization” as put by Sofia Johnasson, is “the media turning to sensationalism, entertainment and the realm of private affairs.” Also, tabloids are a change from “hard” media to “soft” media, it’s a recreational diversion from the depressing world events we hear about each day. And with what’s going on in the world now a days, its no wonder people turn to tabloids.
The intrusivity of tabloids can be very detrimental to unstable celebrities. If I could pick any celebrity that I thought was exploited by the paparrazi and tabloids recently it would be Britney Spears. The tabloids really played on her unstable image that she had a few years ago and even personally effected her life.
I think people can admit that it all started going downhill after her text message break up with K Fed. The breakup left her single and alone with two children while she was suffering from problems of her own. She was even photographed partying with young Hollywood, especially Lindsay Lohan and I’m sure everyone is familiar with the “crotch shot” phase. When the paparazzi photographed her driving around with her baby in her lap, with no seatbelt or car seat, the tabloids literally had power over her life. I say this because she was already in a custody battle with KFed and that photograph did nothing to help in her favor. Even if what is written in tabloids are not 100%, one things for sure- pictures don’t lie.
