Celebrities are everywhere in our culture. Not only do we see them in the movies and on television shows, but they are also in advertisements and in tabloid magazines. Basically, celebrities have become an inherent part of the American culture. We glorify them. We view them as being better than “regular” people. We see their luxurious lifestyles and we get a glimpse into their personal lives through tabloids. Essentially, with all of this exposure to celebrities throughout our own lives, we feel as though we know these celebrities and they become a part of our lives.
Celebrities have an image. This image defines them and becomes the kind of person they want to be seen as in the public eye. They have people working behind the scenes in order to create and maintain their image. We, as the viewing public, feed into this image. We take this image to heart and we understand these celebrities to truly be the people that they are promoted as being. We then feel as though we know these celebrities personally.
A problem that has come out of this feeling as though we know these celebrities personally is celebrity stalkers. For instance, Kim Kardashian has recently had a stalker. Her stalker began contacting her directly through Twitter. Not only that, but he has moved across the country to be closer to her and he has shown up at several of her public appearances. He truly believes that they are having a love affair.
Kim Kardashian is not the first or only celebrity to have had a sincere stalker. These stalkers believe that they are legitimately a part of the celebrity’s life. They truly believe that they know and understand them. They believe this because of all the exposure that celebrities are given. It is a very serious situation and perhaps there should less exposure of these celebrities in order to ensure that this sort of criminal activity does not take place.
